Question:
Hi. I have been attending your church for maybe 5 or 6 months now. All my life I have been told I am a presbyterian and never thought any differently. Now I know that I have a choice as to what religion I want to be a part of. After attending your church and seeing everything that goes on...I have decided I do want to be baptist. I have started reading my bible every day, and I was saved March 1, 2009. I want to take the next step though. I want to be baptized and become a member of your church. It is a huge leap and I am scared and nervous, but I know I'm ready. My question though is...what all do I need to know and do in order to be baptized? I didn't know if there was something I had to know in order to fulfill this dream. If you could answer my question that would be greatly appreciated :) thank you for reading this!
Answer:
We are, of course, eager to have people join our church. We also understand the feeling of anxiousness that comes with this very important event. Most of us were nervous when we joined also. Concerning what you need to know and do, before we baptize anyone, the person must make a profession of faith. Basically, that means you’ve told us that you’ve been saved and you want to be baptized. Most people do this by going to our pastor during the invitation and telling him that they’ve been saved and wish to be baptized. Our pastor will ask you to fill out a card, listing your name, address and similar information as well as few other questions that you will have no trouble answering. Later, our pastor will talk to you about when it will be convenient for you to be baptized. If you would prefer, rather than going down front to talk to the pastor, you may talk to him privately at another time and arrangements can be made then. The baptism itself will take place in the baptistery above the choir loft. Through the door on the left side of the auditorium, next to the piano, there are steps going up to it. You can also get to it from the door on right side of the auditorium via a hallway going behind the stage area. Up the stairs, there are dressing rooms. Someone will show you. Once both you and the pastor are ready, the pastor will get in the water first. After a short period of time, usually to wait for the congregation to finish singing a verse of a song or to say something to the congregation, he will signal for you to join him. There are steps from the dressing room going down in to the water. He will tell you where to stand. With his help, you will lean backwards until you are completely under water, then you will stand up and go back up the steps into the dressing room you came from. We hope that this information will help ease your concerns and prepare you to take this step. We are eager to assist you in any way we can and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
